主な研究業績: 地球型惑星に普遍的な玄武
岩マグマの起源、太古代の地球に特徴的なコマチアイトマグマの生成条件、さらには45億年前の原始地球マグマオー
シャンに関する先駆的でかつ永く引用される実験的研究をしてきた。東京工業大学に地殻からマントル深部〔深さ1400km〕までの温度圧力を再現可能な世
界最高水準の高圧実験室(Magma
Factory)を作った。 ハワイホットスポットを研究対象に、高温高圧実験と火山のフィールド調査から総合調査を1998年以来実施している。日本列
島の活火山の深部構造および火山活動の長期予測に向けた実験的研究を展開している。マグマの起源に関する実験的研究に関して、国際地球化学会 クラークメ
ダル(1986年)、文部科学大臣表彰科学技術者賞(2007年)を受賞。
